Located in the hub of the world's greatest metropolis, 26 Second Avenue is a vibrant community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of its members and the residents of greater New York. The community has evolved its spiritual services into a long and growing list of projects and activities - each one aimed at the spiritual upliftment of every soul. Here is a brief summary of our current projects:

Tuesday and Friday Programs

Discussions, classes, vegetarian feast, and chanting - these spiritualized activities are the staple for every Tuesday and Friday Program at 26 Second Avenue. The discourses cover a wide range of topics from karma and reincarnation to spiritualizing our lives with devotional service. The free vegetarian feast is a special (i.e., completely delicious) offering of love from the congregation. The chanting or kirtan is a great way to express our devotion for Krishna and just a lot of fun.

Every Tuesday and Friday at 6:45pm. All are welcome.

Women's Support Circle

The Women's Support Circle of 26 Second Avenue gathers monthly to discuss spiritual issues relevant to women. The Circle includes lectures on various Krishna conscious topics, workshops, demonstrations, and field trips.

For more information please contact Sukavaha Devi Dasi.

University Programs

Several brahmacaris (monks) grace college campuses in and around New York City to share the benefits of Krishna consciousness with society's up-and-coming leaders. With crowds upto 120 students per week, students in cooking classes have a unique opportunity to learn delectable vegetarian and karma free cooking from some highly spiritual chefs. Additionally, Bhagavad-gita study groups provide the intellectual and philosophical stimulation many college students relish. Special, guest lectureres are also known to show up from time to time.

Seminars

Knowledge and Bhakti must go hand in hand in order to make steady spiritual progress. The community at 26 Second Avenue has been truly blessed with a stream of seminars by deeply learned Vaishnavas. Here are a few of the notable seminars to date:

  • Grihasta Ashram - Marriage and Krishna consciousness
  • ISKCON Communications Seminar
  • The Process of Deity Worship
  • Japa/Chanting Meditation Workshop
  • Introduction to Sanskrit
  • The Art of Book Distribution
  • Anatomy of an Offense

Bhaktivedanta Ashram

Located in a Lower Eastside apartment, the Bhaktivedanta Ashram offers physical and spiritual shelter to the serious teachers and practitioners of Krishna Consciousness in New York City. The Ashram is headed by the veteran devotee, Yajna Purusha das, who is the Temple President of 26 Second Avenue and manages the ongoing outreach engagements of Ashram residents.

If you would like more information on the Bhaktivedanta Ashram, contact Yajna Purusha das at (212) 982-1819.

Bhakti Sastri

In order to make steady advancement in Krishna consciousness, the systematic study and understanding of Vedic scriptures is required. Srila Prabhupada established the Bhakti Sastri degree program for that purpose. The Bhakti Sastri student studies four essential spiritual works: The Bhagavad-gita As It Is, Nectar of Devotion, Nectar of Instruction and Sri Isopanisad.

Traditionally Vedic knowledge was imparted from teacher to student in one-on-one sessions of spiritual instruction. The very word Upanishad - which comes from the Sanskrit for "sitting down near" - suggests such a personal exchange between the instructor and the instructed. Bhakti Sastri courses utilize a tutorial system in which each instructor is assigned only a handful of students. This ensures personal attention, and helps to foster strong relationships amongst students and teachers.

Led by Radha Vallabha das, a highly learned Vaishnava who achieved his Bhakti Sastri degree with High Honors, the Bhakti Sastri Program at 26 Second Avenue serves over two dozen Vaishnavas in the greater New York area. For more on this program, contact Radha Vallabha das at (212) 982-1819.

Theatre 26

Theater 26 is dedicated to developing new works of Vaishnava drama for contemporary audiences. A New York-based ensemble of actors, directors, and writers, Theater 26 is committed to theater that explores questions of God, self, and the connection between the two. Original dramas include "Death Rides the 6 Train" and "Dance of the Infidels," and original comedies include "Bhagavad-gita: As It Isn't" and "Kanishta Madness." Adapted classics include "The Meeting of Kunti and Radheya."

"In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the holy names of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way."
